Steve Potts begann mit 8 Jahren Schlagzeug zu spielen. Seine ersten "Lehrer" waren sein älterer Bruder Paris (Alvin) Potts und Cousin (Al Jackson, Jr.), die Steve zum Schlagzeug spielen ermunterten. An Wochenenden spielte er in Clubs mit Stax Artists. Mttlerweile ist Steve Drummer für Booker T and the MGs.

Geboren und aufgewachsen ist Steve Potts in Memphis. Der große Produzent Jim Gains (Santana) verschaffte Potts Jobs bei z.B. Willie Mitchell und Hi Records recording Pop Staples, Al Green, Marti Pellow, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay.

Weitere Aufnhamen folgten mit Neil Young, Booker T and The MGs, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Kirk Whalum, Cat Power, David Crosby, Axelle Red, Maria Muldaur, Eddie Floyd, Terence Trent D’Arby, Boz Scaggs, Buddy Guy, Jesse Valenzuela, Lucky Peterson, Johnny Lang, Wynonna Judd, Robin Ford, Memphis Horns, Blues Brothers 2000, Tony Joe White, Lonnie Brooks, Rufus Thomas, Ike Turner, Bill Lee Riley, Mavis Staples, Shemekia Copeland, Otis Rush, Guy Sebastian und Luther Allison, um nur einige zu nennen.

Auf Tour war er mit Booker T and the MGs, Isaac Hayes, Gregg Allman, Neil Young, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young, Wynonna Judd, Cat Power, Blues Brothers Band, Golden Earring und Guy Sebastian.

Potts machte auch Erfahrungen beim Fernsehen als Musiker bei Oprah, Tonight Show, David Letterman, Ellen Degeneres, Good Morning America, Eric Clapton (Crossroads) mit Joe Walsh und the Super Bowl Half Time Show mit The Blues Brothers 2000 Band (John Goodman, Jim Belushi and Dan Akyroyd).
